Rena Owen
Rena Owen (born July 27, 1962 in Moerewa , Bay of Islands ) is a New Zealand film, television and theater actress .
Life
Rena Owen grew up in Moerewa , a small town in the Bay of Islands . She has eight siblings, her father was Māori , her mother of European descent. During her time in high school , she participated in Kapa Haka groups and performed in school musicals. She became a nurse and worked in the profession for four years before moving to the UK.
She is best known for her lead role as Beth in the 1994 film The Last Warrior by Lee Tamahori . For this role, Owen received several awards, including the award for best actress at the Montreal World Film Festival and the San Diego International Film Festival . The film set a new record for box office receipts in New Zealand. Owen also played the role in the sequel to What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? from 1999.
Owen worked with Australian director Rolf de Heer in the 1998 film Dance Me to My Song , in which she played the role of Rix . For this role she received the award for best supporting actress at the AFI Awards .
Owen is married to the actor Faleolo Alailima.
