Moerewa is a place in the Far North District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located around 5 km west of Kawakawa and around 19 km east of Kaikohe in a slightly hilly landscape. To the south of the village, the Waiharakeke Stream meanders eastwards. A few kilometers away in the northeast is the Bay of Islands .
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,431 inhabitants, 6.7% less than in the 2006 census. 88.3% of the population are Māori
economy
The place is a service center for the surrounding agriculture. The main line of business is meat processing. In the economic crisis of the 1990s, the local economy was hit hard and unemployment rose. Since then the population has been shrinking steadily.

Road traffic
Through the village leading New Zealand State Highway 1 , km from the around 6 north-west of State Highway 10 branches and 5 km east in Kawakawa of State Highway 11 links the east coast.
Rail transport
Moerewa used to be on the Opua Branch of the North Auckland Line . This railway line was originally built as a link between the Bay of Islands and Whangarei and opened on April 13, 1911. From December 1925 to November 1956 the Northland Express drove through Moerewa and thus offered a direct connection to Auckland . After it was discontinued, passengers were transported between Opuha and Whangarei by mixed passenger and freight trains until passenger traffic was completely abandoned on July 18, 1976. In 1985 freight traffic was also stopped and the line from Moerewa to Kawakawa was dismantled. The route from today's endpoint Otiria to Moerewa is still preserved, but is no longer used.
Education
The Moerewa School is a composite school with grades 1 to 10 and an average of 180 students as of 2017. It was founded in 1913. In 2005 the Otiria School was merged with the Moerewa School .
