Russell is located on the Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a large bay in the north of the North Island of New Zealand . The water with its coastline is a popular holiday destination in New Zealand and of cultural and historical importance.

geography

The bay is located around 60 km north of Whangarei on the east coast of the Northland Peninsula . It stretches around 20 km inland and is flanked by numerous smaller bays and inlets and inlets, such as Waikare Inlet and Te Rawhiti Inlet in the south and Kerikeri Inlet and Te Puna Inlet in the west and north-west. The places Russell , Paihia , Waitangi and Kerikeri are located on the bay or on the adjoining inlets.

Administratively, the Bay of Islands is part of the Far North District of the Northland region .

history

The first European to visit the Bay of Islands was the British navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook in 1769, who gave the bay its current name. The first European settlers settled on the coast of the bay. While whalers had been living in the bay's settlements since the end of the 18th century, the first missionaries moved to the area in 1814 . In 1815 was in the Oihi Bay with Thomas King , the first New Zealand child of European descent born.

On February 6, 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi between the British Crown and Chiefs of the Māori was first signed in Waitangi in the Bay of Island . It is New Zealand's oldest constitutional charter. Okiato on the Russell side of the Bay of Islands then briefly became the country's first capital.

The grave of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser is on his estate in Kaurinui in the Bay of Islands .

Flora and fauna

The islands of the Bay of Islands serve as refuge for endangered native species. They are kept free of invasive species .
