Rainbow Falls

The Kerikeri River is a river in Far North District of the Region Northland on the North Island of New Zealand . The river is not significant, but is known for some of the oldest architectural monuments from the European settlement history of New Zealand, which are located at its mouth.

geography

The river has its source 17 km west of Kerikeri in the Puketi Forest and after a little more than 20 km at Kerikeri it flows via a ford into the Kerikeri Inlet, a northwestern branch of the Bay of Islands belonging to the Pacific . Its catchment area is 170 km 2 .

Description and usage

There was a bridge at the ford, but it was demolished to protect the historical structures. In 2008 a road bridge was opened several hundred meters upstream. In 2010, a footbridge was built 200 meters above the ford. A hiking trail leads from the estuary about three miles upstream to Rainbow Falls . One of New Zealand's first hydroelectric power stations was built on this river, remains are visible from the hiking trail.

The river was used by Chief Hongi Hika , whose Kororipo , who was important in the Musket Wars, was on the other side of the river.

Historical buildings

In the estuary are the most famous historical sights of New Zealand:

  • the Stone Store , built in 1832 , the oldest surviving stone building in New Zealand,
  • the Kerikeri Mission House , built in 1922 , the oldest surviving wooden building in Australia and New Zealand
  • the St James' Church , since 1829, in its present form since the 1878th
