Paihia is a small town in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The city is located around 55 km north-northwest of Whangarei on the Veronica Channel , which leads out to the Bay of Islands . 1.5 km northwest of downtown Paihia is Waitangi , where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 , and on the opposite side of the bay, 3.5 km northeast is the small town of Russell , which was New Zealand's first capital between 1840 and 1841 . The New Zealand State Highway 11 runs through Paihia and connects the city to Opua , Kawakawa and New Zealand State Highway 1 to the south and connects to the New Zealand State Highway 10 to the west .
history
Paihia is known for its proximity to Waitangi and Russell . 1823 the missionary erected Samuel Marsden at the invitation of the local Māori - Chiefs Te Koki in Paihia a mission station in 1829 and it was from Paihia speak as a village. On January 29, 1840 lieutenant governor was William Hobson to Paihia , a few days later in Waitangi with numerous Māori - Chiefs the Treaty of Waitangi signed.
In Paihia u. a. hosted New Zealand's first cricket game and built New Zealand's first church . The church opened on September 21, 1823. The current stone church, St Paul's Anglican Church , is the fifth church on this site and was built in 1925.

In the 2013 census, the town had 1,719 inhabitants, 3.0% less than in the 2006 census.
tourism
Once a small fishing village, Paihia is now a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Waitangi and Russell .
