Kaikohe is a small town in the Far North District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
Kaikohe is located around 60 km northwest of Whangarei, embedded in a hilly landscape with surrounding mountains up to 361 m high. Almost 5 km north is the 4.5 x 3.5 km large and only 2-3 m deep Lake Omapere . About 5 km to the east is the small town of Ngawha Springs . Here hot thermal water emerges from the Ngawha geothermal field to the surface. To the west of the city, Kaikohe Hill rises 300 m above sea level. From here you have a good view of the dunes of Hokianga Habour and the farmland to the east and south of the 625 m high Mount Hikurangi .
The hills around the city are of volcanic origin and were once fortified villages of the Māori ( Pā ).
history
The city has its origins in a Māori village called Opango , which was the cultural center of Iwi Ngāpuhi . In the early 19th century, a rival Māori tribe attacked the village and the survivors lived in the Kohekohe groves ( Kohekohe is a native tree) on Tokareireia ( Kaikohe Hill, now Kaikohe Hill ). After the incident, the place became known as Kaikohekohe ( kai means food ), which was later shortened to Kaikohe .
The war chief Hone Heke settled in the place after the end of the fighting in 1848 and died there two years later. His nephew of the same name also lived in Kaikohe , he was a member of the New Zealand Parliament for the Māori of the North Island . In April 1911, a memorial to him was unveiled on Kaikohe Hill.
A park in the city was dedicated to Rawiri Taiwhanga . He was probably New Zealand's first farmer to begin the now economically important commercial dairy industry . In 1934 he cured dairy cows and sold butter . There is also a Pioneer Village in town , which is a faithfully recreated parish in Northland in the 19th century.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 3915 inhabitants, 5.1% fewer than in the 2006 census.
economy
Kaikohe is of regional importance as a shopping and service center for a predominantly agricultural region with a catchment area of 28,000 inhabitants.
Infrastructure
Through the city leading New Zealand State Highway 12 , the Kaikohe with the western and eastern parts of the region connects.
