Lake Omapere is a small lake, but the largest in the region Northland on the North Island of New Zealand . It is located about 5 km north of Kaikohe . The State Highway 1 passes near the north bank, the State Highway 12 leads about 3 km south-east over.

The lake is 5 km long and 14 km² in size, the water depth is fairly constant between 2 m and 3 m. The lake level is 237 m above sea level. The lake has a catchment area of only 1700 hectares. The Lake Omapere Restoration and Management Project seeks to implement a voluntary environmental management strategy to protect the lake, which is suffering from agricultural sewage.

The lake was created when a valley was blocked by a lava flow from the volcanoes near the lake shore and the water built up. Trees whose stumps are still under water today were flooded. Volcanism is still active today on the southwest bank in the form of hot soda springs.

The native grass Mapere , which gave the lake its name, grows in the marshland around the lake .
