Cleistocactus parapetiensis is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet parapetiensis means 'from the valley of the Rio Parapeti (Bolivia)'.

description

Cleistocactus parapetiensis grows with columnar, non-branched, green shoots that taper towards the tip and reaches heights of 60 to 70 centimeters with diameters of up to 4 centimeters. There are 19 low, transversely furrowed ribs . The conspicuous areoles are close together. The approximately 20 unequal, needle-like thorns are whitish to brown and 3 to 10 millimeters long. Some of them are hairy. The thorns are difficult to differentiate into central and radial spines.

The tubular, barely opening flowers protrude horizontally and are slightly curved over the pericarpel . They are 3 to 3.5 centimeters long and reach 6 to 7 millimeters in diameter. The strawberry-red flower tube is covered with a few green scales and a few white hairs. The bracts are greenish yellow. The spherical fruits are more or less purple-brown and have a diameter of up to 1 centimeter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cleistocactus parapetiensis is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca , Santa Cruz and Tarija in dry forests at altitudes of 900 meters. It was first described in 1952 by Martín Cárdenas .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
