action

England around 100 years ago. Wendy Darling and her brothers John and Michael live in a perfectly normal family. Nothing distinguishes her from any other child, except that Wendy has a talent as a storyteller. Every evening she tells her brothers about mysterious worlds, evil pirates and other fantasy creatures. But she has another listener: Peter Pan, the boy who will never grow up. He likes their stories too.

One day, however, he is seen by Wendy when he is staying at night in her bedroom, which she shares with her brothers. Although Wendy has only seen Peter briefly, she is fascinated by the boy who can also fly. But when she was recording the story at school the next day and was caught, the indignant teacher wrote a letter to Mr. Darling, Wendy's father. Offended on his honor, Mr. Darling decides to make some strict rules. Nanny Nana, a St. Bernard dog, is no longer allowed into the house and from the next day, Wendy is brought up by her strict aunt.

But Peter Pan visits Wendy, John and Michael again in their room and finally takes them to Neverland . “His” little fairy bell does not agree with this at all and in addition, Captain Hook is waiting in Neverland . The pirate once lost his right hand in a fight against Peter, which was eaten by a large crocodile. Hook seeks revenge on Peter Pan, using any means to harm the boy. Once in Neverland, Wendy plays the mother for the lost boys.

The five lost boys fell out of the stroller as babies and ended up in Neverland. When Wendy asks why there are no “lost girls”, Peter says that girls are far too smart to fall out of the stroller. Wendy is so intrigued by this answer that she wants to kiss him. Peter doesn't even know what a kiss is and gives her an acorn, which then saves Wendy's life.

Little by little, however, Wendy realizes that there are not only advantages to staying a child forever, since then you will probably never understand feelings like love. When she tries to talk to Peter about it, he gets angry and leaves her alone. Still, Wendy got him thinking. He flies back to the Darling family home and finds that Wendy's mother is still waiting at the window for her children to return. So he comes to a conclusion: Wendy cannot be with him and her mother.

Confused Wendy goes to Hook, who offers her to join his crew. Wendy tries to consider the offer, realizing that she seems to be forgetting about her parents more and more. So she makes the decision to leave Neverland with her brothers. Wendy offers to come with them to Peter, but he insists that he always wants to be a boy.

Hook captures all of the children, including Wendy and her brothers, and holds them aboard his ship. Peter wants to save the children and there is a final fight between Hook and Peter. Hook has almost defeated Peter when Wendy gives him a real kiss and shows her love for him. This gives him new energy, which he uses to finally defeat Hook. Hook is eventually swallowed by the crocodile that has already eaten his hand.

Wendy, John and Michael return home and are warmly received by their parents. Suddenly the Lost Boys are still standing in the doorway and Wendy persuades her parents to let her keep them. The lost boys are accepted into the family and Peter Pan watches from the window and understands what he will never be able to enjoy in his life: having a family and living properly. Wendy notices that Peter is standing by the window and asks if he will ever come back, to which he replies that he will come to hear stories about himself.

But Wendy never saw Peter Pan again. She passed the story on to her children and they will tell her children again and so on, as all children grow up - except one.

Reviews

"The film is characterized by digital effects as well as by spectacular, sometimes quite tangible fights, although it does not clumsily balance the underlying melancholy of the original."

background

In 2002 Jeremy Sumpter was selected for the role of Peter Pan in a worldwide casting. It cost him months of hard training (including fencing lessons) until he was able to live up to the role in sport; in order to be able to "fly" (that is, hang on a tightrope for hours), he needed strong back muscles. In addition, it grew so fast (20 cm) during the filming that Wendy's window, through which Peter comes into her room, had to be raised four times so that he didn't hit his head all the time.

Awards

Film as the Best Family Drama and Jeremy Sumpter won in 2004 the Young Artist Award . Rachel Hurd-Wood , Harry Newell and Carsen Gray were nominated for the same award.

Jeremy Sumpter won the Saturn Award in 2004 . Rachel Hurd-Wood, Janet Patterson for the costumes and the film for Best Fantasy Film were nominated for the same award.

The film received two nominations for the Visual Effects Society Award and one for the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award in 2004 .
