Ethan Van der Ryn

Ethan Van der Ryn (born October 21, 1962 in Alameda , California ) is an American sound engineer .

Life

Van der Ryn studied until 1986 at San Francisco State University , which he left with a bachelor's degree. In the last year of his studies, he first worked as a cable helper in the film The Nutcracker by Carroll Ballard . After completing his studies, Van der Ryn specialized in sound engineering and started working at Lucasfilm . In the following 14 years he initially worked as an audio editor, including for the films Cadillac Man and Avalon (both 1990). His first film as a sound effects technician was Terminator 2 in 1991 ; other films such as Titanic and Saving Private Ryan followed.

Van der Ryn was involved in most of the films directed by Michael Bay and Peter Jackson as a sound engineer. He worked six times with sound engineer Mike Hopkins , with Van der Ryn responsible for the external sound effects and Hopkins for the sound recordings of the dialogues. His first big success was The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers , for whose sound editing he received an Oscar in 2003 . Van der Ryn won another Oscar in the category of best sound editing in 2005 for his work King Kong . He was also nominated for an Oscar in the category of best sound editing in 2008 and 2012 for Transformers and Transformers 3 and in 2013 for Argo .

Van der Ryn lives in Malibu with his wife and two children .
