The 42nd British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place in 1989 in London . The film prizes of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) were awarded in 20 categories, plus four special or honorary award categories. The award honored films from 1988.

The last emperor was considered the favorite with eleven nominations in the run-up to the award ceremony, but finally receivedthree awardslike the six times nominated film The Empire of the Sun. With only one award out of six nominations, Babette's party was one of the losers of the evening.
