Two Worlds is a British feature film from 1988. The film was made after childhood memories of screenwriter Shawn Slovo.
action
The film is set in Johannesburg in 1963. The parents of 13-year-old Molly Roth are communists and active opponents of South African apartheid policy . The young girl grows up sheltered and away from the everyday problems of the black population. There is no racial segregation in her parents' home. However, Molly goes to a school that is only attended by white students and strict segregation is observed in the parents' homes of her friends. Her parents' political activities are alien to her. This changes when suddenly her father Gus has to go into exile and leaves the family. Her mother Diana now has to continue the political struggle alone. Molly's friends turn away from her, to which she initially reacts with incomprehension. But now she is inevitably confronted with the political world of her parents. The quarrel with the mother turns into a close bond with the mother and growing interest in the parents' political work. She finally realizes the injustice in her country and grows up faster. At the funeral of a colored freedom fighter, she finally stands side by side with her mother and has also matured into an activist against apartheid.
Reviews
“Less an examination of the background of apartheid than a committed plea for human rights that draws its suggestive power primarily from the sensitive and touching description of the emotional worlds of its protagonists. It makes clear that humanitarian action is inextricably linked with appreciation and respect for human feelings. "
