Philip "Phil" Kaufman (born October 23, 1936 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Philip Kaufman first attended the University of Chicago and then moved to Harvard Law School. He later moved to Europe as a backpacker with his wife. The European film culture and the encounter with Anaïs Nin were formative for him on his way to becoming a filmmaker.

Kaufman had his breakthrough with the remake The Body Eaters Are Coming (1978). He and George Lucas developed the plot for the Oscar- winning film Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 and thus the basis for Lawrence Kasdan's screenplay.

In 1989 he and Jean-Claude Carrière received an Oscar nomination for the best adapted screenplay for the film The Unbearable Lightness of Being .

His 1990 film Henry & June , the film adaptation of the relationship between Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin , triggered a reform of the US film rating system and the introduction of the MPAA rating , especially the NC-17 rating.

Philip Kaufman has a son with his wife.
