The 31st British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place in London in 1978 . The film awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) were awarded in 17 categories, with no BAFTA being awarded in the category Best Documentary this year; there was also an honorary award. The award honored films from 1977 .

Award winners and nominations

The favorites to be awarded in the run-up to the event were Sidney Lumet's Network with nine and Richard Attenborough's The Bridge of Arnhem with eight nominations. Most of the awards went to Woody Allen's Der Stadtneurotiker , who won five out of six nominations.
