Richard Raleigh Portman (born April 2, 1934 in Los Angeles , † January 28, 2017 in Tallahassee ) was an American sound engineer who, in addition to the Oscar for best sound, also won two BAFTA awards .

biography

His father Clem was also a sound engineer and was nominated for an Oscar in 1970 for best sound in the film Gaily, Gaily . Richard Portman began his career in the Hollywood film industry in 1957 as a trainee at Columbia Pictures before becoming a junior sound engineer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1959 , where he was promoted to assistant sound recording engineer . In 1970 he joined the film production company Lion's Gate Films founded by Robert Altman and became its sound director. He was significantly involved in the creation of completely new processes for re-recording and sound post-production and was the first sound engineer in Hollywood to mix a complete film on his own.

At the Academy Awards in 1972 he was nominated for the Oscar for the best sound for the first time, together with Jack Solomon for Grandpa Kotch - With full steam out of the dead end (Kotch, 1971). Further nominations in this category followed in 1973 with Charles Grenzbach and Christopher Newman for The Godfather (1972) and with Gene S. Cantamessa for Bill McKay - The Candidate (1972), 1974 with Les Fresholtz for Paper Moon (1973) and with Larry Jost for Dolphin's Day (1973), 1975 with GS Cantamessa for Frankenstein Junior (1974) and 1976 with Don MacDougall , Curly Thirlwell and Jack Solomon for Funny Lady (1975).

In 1976 he won the British BAFTA Award for Best Sound for the first time together with William A. Sawyer , James E. Webb and Chris McLaughlin for Nashville (1975). In 1977 he was nominated with David M. Ronne , Don MacDougall and Curly Thirlwell for an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for the ABC- produced television film Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years (1977). He then received a BAFTA nomination for New York, New York (1977) along with Kay Rose , Michael Colgan , James Fritch and Larry Jost in 1978 , before starring in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) with Sam F. Shaw , Robert R. Rutledge , Gordon Davidson , Gene Corso , Derek Ball , Don MacDougall, Bob Minkler , Ray West , Michael Minkler , Les Fresholtz and Ben Burtt received another BAFTA Award for Best Tone.

At the 1979 Academy Awards , he and William McCaughey , Aaron Rochin and C. Darin Knight received the Oscar for Best Sound for Going Through Hell (1978). Together with C. Darin Knight and James J. Klinger , he was nominated for the 1980 BAFTA Award in this category for this film. For the film Nashville Lady (1980) he was nominated for an Oscar in 1981 with Roger Heman Jr. and James R. Alexander and in 1982 for the BAFTA Award for Best Sound with Gordon Ecker , JR Alexander and R. Heman Jr. . There were further Oscar nominations for the best sound in 1982 with David M. Ronne for Am golden See (1981) and at the 1985 Academy Awards with Nick Alphin , Robert Thirlwell and David M. Ronne for People on the River (1984).

Most recently, together with John Pritchett , Dan Wallin and Anna Behlmer, he received a nomination for an Emmy in the category of the most outstanding sound mix in a miniseries or a series special for the TV film Citizen Cohn - Handlanger des Todes ( HBO) produced by Home Box Office (HBO) ( 1992). The film Die Hand an der Wiege was also made in 1992 .

Portman, who was involved in the making of more than 160 films as a sound engineer, worked with well-known film directors such as Daniel Petrie , Frank Pierson , Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese , George Lucas , Michael Cimino , Michael Apted , Jack Lemmon , Francis Ford Coppola , Michael Ritchie , Peter Bogdanovich , Mike Nichols , Mel Brooks , Herbert Ross and Mark Rydell . After he had largely withdrawn from the film business in 2004, he became a lecturer in sound engineering at Florida State University in Tallahassee . He died in January 2017 at the age of 82.
