The Day of the Dolphin (orig. The Day of the Dolphin ) is an American science fiction thriller from 1973. Directed by Mike Nichols . The novel " A rational animal " by the French writer Robert Merle served as a template .
The film was released in US cinemas on December 19, 1973. In Germany, the film only opened on August 25, 1974.

The scientist Dr. Jake Terell and his wife Maggie train their experimental dolphins Alpha and Beta to learn human language. The experiment, which is followed with great interest in high government circles, one day results in the kidnapping of the two animals.
In the course of the rescue efforts, the scientist couple uncovered an insidious plan: The animals are to be used to carry out an explosive attack on the US President's yacht . Terrell manages at the last moment to let the dolphins loose on the boat of the conspirators.
