Severn Darden

Severn Teackle Darden (born November 9, 1929 in New Orleans , Louisiana , † May 26, 1995 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) was an American actor. He was particularly recognized as a comedian in improvisational theater.

Life

Severn Darden, son of New Orleans District Attorney Severn Darden Sr., and his wife Geraldine Rubinstein Darden grew up in a wealthy family. After graduating from the New Orleans Academy, he came to the University of Chicago in 1948 to study medicine, joined the theater group and was particularly noticeable for his eccentric behavior. One event in particular at Rockefeller Chapel on the university campus has achieved legendary status. While on the run, he is said to have escaped his persecutors by lying on the altar and shouting “Sanctuary, Sanctuary”. In the confusion created thereby, he should then have disappeared. In 1951 he gave up his studies to become an actor and left Chicago . He returned in 1955 and became a member of The Compass , an acting group that also included Mike Nichols , Elaine May , Barbara Harris and Shelly Berman . The Compass specialized in improvisational comedy. With this, Darden had "found his true calling". His most successful figure was a professor with a German accent, for whom he borrowed the name from Walther von der Vogelweide .

In 1959, Paul Sills , Howard Alk, and Bernard Sahlins from The Compass founded The Second City . The cast at the premiere were Andrew Duncan , Eugene Troobnik , Severn Darden, Barbara Harris, Mina Kolb , Roger Bowen and William Mathieu . Alan Arkin and Paul Sand soon joined this group. In 1962 the group appeared on Broadway with the play From the Second City . 1963 followed a short season in London .

As early as 1961 and 1962, Severn Darden had his first television appearances as a guest star in the series Alfred Hitchcock and Car 54, please report . In 1964 he made his film debut in Goldstein under Philip Kaufman , who made his directorial debut with this film. Other actors from The Second City, Anthony Holland , Jack Burns and Del Close , as well as Viola Spolin, the mother of Paul Sills and icon of improvisational comedy, could be seen in this film . In Kaufman's next film, Fearless Frank (1967), Darden was on the cast list, as was Anthony Holland. Severn Darden received critical praise for his roles in two other films this year, for having a try with my wife and above all for his role as the Soviet spy Krydor Kropotkin in ... chases Dr. Sheefer . Severn Darden has also guest-starred on several series, including The Charming Jeannie , Her Appearance, Al Mundy , The Bold Ones: The Lawyers , Alias ​​Smith and Jones , Bonanza , Cannon , The Six Million Dollar Man , Starsky & Hutch , A Colt just in case or cheers . In 1987 he was one of the main characters in the series Take Five , but only six episodes were filmed and only two were shown on television.

As his role offers became rarer, he withdrew more and more from Hollywood, but still gave courses in improvised acting. In 1992 he moved to Santa Fe , where he died of a heart attack in 1995.

Severn Darden was married three times, including to Erin Martin and most recently to Heather Bleackley Darden. He had a son, Scott MacKinnon.
