action

Wanda Nevada grew up an orphan. During a poker game it is placed as a bet by the gambler Slade and won by the adventurer Beaudray Demerille. The very young woman is insecure and doesn't quite know how to deal with the situation. Demerille takes them with him first. Little by little, the girl realizes that he is a good person. She tells him that she has a dream of becoming a famous singer one day.

In a saloon , the two of them hear Texas Curly talking about a huge gold mine in the Grand Canyon region that the Indians are said to have abandoned years ago. His remarks not only attract Demerille's attention, but also those of the two bandits Strap Pangburn and Ruby Muldoon. They pursue the old man as he leaves the saloon and kill him when he refuses to give them the information about the gold mine in the hope of finding a map of the situation on him. They are watched by Wanda during their nefarious deed. One of the perpetrators becomes aware of the young girl, but Wanda is able to escape him for now. Due to a clumsiness, the bandits are able to take up their trail again, but Demerille manages to shake them off. While resting in a motel, it turns out that Wanda is in possession of the map. Texas Curly had lost his leather pouch with the plan on leaving the saloon and Wanda had taken it.

After the unlikely couple first met an old prospector on the way to the mine, who gave them some tips, a little later they came across the ornithologist Bittersix, who pretended to want to give Wanda a home but was actually physically attracted to the young girl feels. As he tries to approach her, an arrow hits him in the back. Demerille is happy that nothing happened to Wanda and that she is now back in his care, even if he tries to hide it. They also get to know the very friendly photo reporter Dorothy Deerfield, with whom Demerille flirts a little. Your loving treatment of Wanda is good for her.

After the duo moved on, after some time they came across a broken rope ladder. It is decided that Wanda will abseil down there. Before she does, she assures Demerille that she loves him. When Wanda comes across a cave entrance below, she is attacked by an owl with red eyes. Demerille manages to pull it back up. Now he tries to find out the secret of the cave and comes across huge gold reserves. The large nuggets both fill in bags. When they come back upstairs, Demerille realizes that someone was there. Your storage space has been devastated. Demerille decides to get rid of the gold again and so they throw the bags into the ravine just before Pangburn and Muldoon appear and demand the return of the gold. A wild shooting ensues, with Demerille and Wanda gaining the upper hand. The crooks withdraw. The next morning they find the two men tied on crosses, dead in the blazing sun. When they retreat, they also come across the discarded gold and collect it again.

After Wanda and Beau were repeatedly surprised by inexplicable incidents on the way, the owl with the shining red eyes first reappeared during a nocturnal rest, and shortly afterwards Demerille was hit in the chest by an arrow, while Wanda was sleeping and didn't notice anything. When she finds him at dawn, she is sure that the spirit of the Apache , who, according to tradition, watches over the gold, is responsible for the deed. Desperately she holds the apparently dying man in her arms.

Cut: Wanda, who is still a minor and is about to be admitted to a reformatory, is assaulted by press people to tell something about the place with the fabulous gold treasure. All of a sudden Demerille drives up in an impressive convertible; Wanda jumps in, and together they drive towards the rising sun while the song Morning Sun by Carole King is played.

Production notes and background

It is a film by the United Artists studio . The film was shot in Prescott and Page in Arizona , Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona, Colorado River in Moab , Glen Canyon and Mexican Hat in Utah.

The film grossed approximately $ 2.4 million in US cinemas .

Teri Shields, Brooke Shields mother, has a small supporting role in the film.

In an interview with Lowell Goldman, Peter Fonda recalled his experiences filming Wanda Nevada . Regarding Brooke Shields, he said that this was arguably the best job Shields had done in a film. Because she was not only beautiful but also smart, many men in the film business were afraid to work with her, as was his sister Jane , because the men did not know how to talk to such women or how they are to be directed.

When asked about his father's cameo role, Fonda said he was hilarious. He also told him that he should only be filmed from a greater distance because the beard he was wearing looked so fake. After completing his scenes, his father sent him a letter on the set that was so beautiful that he shared the contents with the crew.

Dennis Schwartz of Ozus' World Movie Reviews stated that the film was "worth seeing" because it was the only time that Peter Fonda had stood in front of the camera with his famous father Henry.
