Mexican Hat is a settlement on community-free area in San Juan County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen the State of Utah . For statistical purposes, the place has been combined to form a census-designated place (CDP) .

The number of inhabitants - 31 at the 2010 census - is a significant decrease from 88 in 2000 and 259 in 1990.

The place borders directly on Monument Valley . The name of the settlement is derived from the Mexican Hat Rock , a rock three kilometers north-northeast of the settlement (37.17 ° N; 109.85 ° W) .

The region consists of desert-like terrain, which is interrupted by canyon landscapes. To the east of the place is a rock formation that looks like a Mexican sombrero and thus gave the place its name.

The motel "San Juan Inn" is remarkable in the village itself; it goes back to a historic trading post for the exchange of goods with the local Navajo .

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census, Mexican Hat had 31 people in 17 households. The population density was 1.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 1.82 people each in the 17 households.

The racial the population was composed of 90.3 percent (28 people) white and 9.7 percent (three people) Native American.

6.5 percent of the population (two people) were under 18 years old, 51.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 41.9 percent were 65 years or older. 45.2 percent of the population was female.
