Blanding is a small town (with the status " City ") in San Juan County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen State of Utah . In 2010 , Blanding had 3,375 residents. Despite the small population, Blanding is the largest town in the county, the administrative seat of Monticello only has around 2000 residents.

Blanding is located on US Highway 191 at an altitude of about 1860 m on a table mountain stretching in a north-south direction between two washes that only temporarily carry water and run south to the San Juan River . In the north are the Abajo Mountains with the Abajo Peak .

history

The region was populated by Navajo Indians when it first came into contact with whites . Your Navajo Nation Reservation now extends across the south of the county, but does not extend as far as Blanding. The Ute Indians occasionally raided the region from the east.

The first whites were Mormon pioneers sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) to colonize the area. The first Mormons reached today's Bluff via the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail in 1880. From there they settled in Monticello, around 70 km to the north. The area in between, later known as blanding, was used as grazing land by ranchers from Monticello.

It was not until 1906 that the first families settled on Table Mountain and built a canal to supply the new settlement called Grayson with water from Johnson Creek , which came from the mountains and carries water permanently. Between 1912 and 1916, the city grew with the influx of Mormons who had originally emigrated to Mexico from the USA . They came back now when political unrest broke out there and sought new settlement areas in Utah. In 1914 the place was renamed Blanding.

The original economic basis of the place was cattle breeding and some agriculture. This expanded to include forestry. After the Second World War, the southeast of Utah was intensively explored for deposits of uranium , and other mineral resources were also found . Blanding became a mining settlement with modest oil production and a uranium mine. Both became unprofitable in the 1980s, so the place had to realign itself.
