A sombrero generally refers to a hat in Spanish (derived from the word sombra for "shadow").

As a loan word in German, a sombrero is a broad-brimmed hat made of straw or felt , which is used by field workers as sun protection, especially in Central and South America. In these areas (especially in Mexico ) it is part of the traditional costume .

In Andalusia / Spain you can find the Sombrero Cordobés . This differs considerably in shape from the Mexican sombrero. The Sombrero Cordobés has a flat brim about eight centimeters wide and a ten to twelve centimeter high, conical head. Sombreros Cordobeses come from the Spanish city of Cordoba and are worn in flamenco (for example in the Garrotín ) and by Andalusian riders. The material is a wool felt or - in the cheaper variant - a felt made of synthetic fiber. The common color is black, but sombreros cordobeses are now also found in red, green, brown, gray and other colors.
