Film-Dienst wrote that raped behind bars was a “lurid detective film with convincing design of the main roles”. In places it seems “too constructed”, but is “very excitingly staged”. The film illustrates “the gradual increase in violence in an increasingly inhuman and corrupt society”.

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was an "exciting thriller with unsettling logic". He shows "an escalation of violence that is shocking because of its naturalness and inevitability".

backgrounds

The film was released in US theaters in April 1976. It is one of the "drive-in" films that were falsely presented as real stories in advertisements (such as The Legend of Boggy Creek from 1972, Walking Tall from 1973, Texas Blood Court 1974, Macon County Line 1975).

Quentin Tarantino selected it in 1996 as one of the films to be shown at the First Quentin Tarantino Film Fest .
