Howard Hesseman ( February 27, 1940 - January 29, 2022 - Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Howard Hesseman was born in Lebanon, Oregon in 1940. His parents Edna Foster and George Henry Hesseman divorced when he was five years old. From then on he grew up with his mother and stepfather, a policeman. Hesseman attended the University of Oregon and co-founded the comedy group The Committee with David Ogden Stiers in San Francisco . At the beginning of his acting career he used the name Don Sturdy, which he later used as a radio DJ. He came to acting through his uncle.

Career

Howard Hessemann made his acting debut on the television series The Andy Griffith Show , playing different roles in two episodes. In the 1970s, alongside TV appearances, he got supporting roles in films, starring in The Hair-raising Journey on a Crazy Bus , Mel Brooks' Last Oddity: The Silent Movie , Raped Behind Bars and the TV movie Ghost of Flight 401 . During this time, Hesseman was often cast as a hippie.

From 1978 to 1982, Hesseman played DJ Johnny Fever in the Cincinnati sitcom WKRP in 90 episodes , which never aired in German-speaking countries but was popular in the United States. Following that television series, Hesseman co-starred in the last two seasons of the series One Day at a Time before starring as the teacher Charlie Moore on Head of the Class in 92 episodes from 1986-1990 . He also took on more cinema appearances over the course of the 1980s, so he mimed the role of Captain Peter "Pete" Lassard, the younger brother of the role Eric Lassard (portrayed by George Gaynes ) in the comedy film Police Academy 2. .
