Martian Child ( Martian Child ) is an American comedy film from the year 2007 . Directed by Menno Meyjes , the screenplay was written by Seth Bass and Jonathan Tolins based on the 2003 novel The Martian Child by David Gerrold .

action

The widowed science fiction writer David, who was trying to get adopted together with his wife at the time, surprisingly receives a call from the home. The supervisor believes Dennis, a boy who thinks he came from Mars, is the ideal child for him. After long doubts and first meetings, he wants to adopt the 8-year-old. His own sister doubts that the widow will be able to cope with this challenge.

There are many initial problems. Dennis is light sensitive and very introverted. He steals and is expelled from school. Friends are hard to find for the little one. Normal everyday life, e.g. B. Breakfast becomes a power struggle. The only bright spot is a good friend of David's, Harlee. With her optimistic manner, she encourages David and supports him regularly.

While David tries to create a home for Dennis, his publishers are eagerly waiting for his new book. David is coming under more and more pressure. He begins to write a book about the adoption of the little alien roommate.

Again and again David has to deal with the authorities and fight for Dennis. His understanding of Dennis' way of dealing with the situation arouses displeasure with the authorities. Only when Dennis admits at a hearing for the youth welfare office that he has only pretended that he comes from Mars, he is allowed to stay with David.

After a heated argument between David and Dennis about an allegedly stolen driver's license, Dennis suddenly speaks 'Martian' again. While David had to take severe criticism at the manuscript presentation of his publishing house for not having written the required science fiction trash novel, Dennis ran away and wanted to go back to Mars. However, he leaves a hint with a self-made slide projector that leads David to the observatory, where he discovers Dennis at breakneck height on the dome, where he is waiting for a spaceship to pick him up. David manages to make it clear to him that he never has to leave and that he finally has a loving father and a home. The two have finally found a way to live together.

The final picture shows David's publisher ( Anjelica Huston ), who sits on the plane and, moved to tears, reads his manuscript to the end.

Reviews

Ronnie Scheib praised the stunning portrayals of John Cusack and Bobby Coleman in Variety magazine on October 24, 2007, which would make the "puffy moralizing" plot bearable. Sheri Linden also highlighted their achievements in The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

The lexicon of the international film says: “ Mixture of stylized science fiction fairy tales and atmospheric father-son melodrama. The touching story about educational responsibility avoids obvious Christmas clichés and also entertains excellently thanks to the well-disposed actors. "
