action

29-year-old Patricia Tracy is penniless and the situation has turned her into a pickpocket. After her sister's death, she takes care of her 6-year-old niece Patsy, who she also trained to be a pickpocket. In the run-up to Christmas, the customers of a department store have proven to be particularly lucrative victims, because in the dense crowd it is quite easy to steal your wallets. But on their last robbery, the two are caught by the department store detectives. Trish, as Patricia calls herself, and Patsy are taken to the office of department store owner Limber, who is determined to report the theft and hand the child over to social services. But since it is the day before Christmas, the social service has already closed and so Limber orders that the department store detective Bert Sanders should watch over the two of them over the holidays. Sanders protests against it, but if he wants to keep his permanent position, he has no choice but to submit. After Christmas, on December 26th, he is supposed to bring them back to the office so that Patsy can be handed over to the youth welfare office and Trish to the police. Since Trish immediately tries to escape, Bert puts her handcuffs. Then she tries by all means to get Bert to let her go, but the dutiful security guard refuses to negotiate with him. After he agrees that Trish and Patsy get a few more things from their apartment, he takes them to his apartment. Patsy is amazed at how big the apartment is for a man alone who doesn't even have a Christmas tree.

Over the time that Trish and Bert have to spend together, they begin to find each other attractive, even though they are actually quite different. Patsy can even get Bert to climb over a fence and steal a Christmas tree. Together they decorate the tree and look forward to Christmas morning. Trish asks Bert to quickly get the Christmas present for Patsy from her apartment and is horrified to discover that her ex-boyfriend Mel has emptied her apartment in the meantime. Since Patsy has not received anything from Santa Claus, she is firmly convinced that he wanted to punish her because she was angry and stole.

While Christmas is actually ruined for Trish and Patsy, Bert takes them to Maplewood for Christmas dinner with his parents. Since Bert's brother is a police officer and thinks he has seen Trish somewhere, she simply claims that she works in Limbert's handbag department. Bert's mother is firmly convinced that she should rather work in her flower shop, which would suit her much better. After Trish and Bert have spent the afternoon together and Patsy stayed with Bert's mother, they and Patsy visit “Santa's Castle” in the evening, a kind of Christmas museum that is located in Maplewood. Patsy is thrilled and she tells the on-duty museum guide David, who she thinks is one of Santa's elves, that Santa Claus hadn't brought her the bike, which she wished so much. The "elf" answers Patsy's problem and says, according to the delivery list, it has actually not yet been delivered and that has happened before. He'll take care of it. Patsy also leaves a message for Santa that she also wishes that she and her aunt would not be separated.

Very early on the morning of December 26th, Bert rushes to Limber's department store to buy a bike and Patsy is overjoyed when, as the elf promised, it was actually delivered. As soon as she tries it on the street, she is kidnapped by Mel, who wants to use her to steal from department store customers again. Here he is caught by Bert and brought to Limbert's office, where Trish and Patsy have to answer for their actions. When Patsy is to be picked up by a representative from the social services, Bert steps in and explains that he would not allow this. Even if he, like Limbert, had only ever seen the bad in people, his eyes would have been opened in the last two days. You just have to give both of them a chance and they could change, just as anyone could. He appeals to his boss to let go of the woman he would love and want to marry. For Limbert, however, this is just "sentimental drivel". Suddenly David walks into the office and introduces himself as Trish and Patsy's lawyer. He can convince Limbert not to bring charges, and Patsy is thrilled that Santa won't let her down. Bert quits his boss and wants to pursue his real passion, music.
