overview
During the Second World War , US pilot Steve Trevor ( Lyle Wagoner ) crashes in the Bermuda Triangle on a remote island inhabited by Amazons . Their Princess Diana (Carter) fights for the right to secretly accompany Trevor back to the United States and to support him as the superhero Wonder Woman in the fight against the Nazis . For this she gets a red and blue costume, a tiara as a throwing weapon, bulletproof bracelets, a magical lasso and an invisible jet. In the first season, which was produced by ABC , she finds out that Trevor's secretary Marcia is a Nazi spy. Diana / Wonder Woman exposes the traitors and ends up becoming Trevor's new secretary Diana Prince . The second and third seasons, produced by CBS , take place in the 1970s. After a 35-year hiatus, Wonder Woman returns to the United States to assist Trevor's son Steve Jr. (Lyle Wagoner in a dual role) in the fight against earthly and alien threats.
background
Lynda Carter had worked as a model for several years and was "burned out and broke" when she unexpectedly landed the lead role for Wonder Woman in 1975 . She received $ 1,500 per episode and $ 1 million in hand money for the second season and emphasized the joy of portraying a symbol of “female strength”. On the flip side, she said that her outfit , which was daring for the time, had been branded as a sex symbol , which she wanted to be "only for her husband". Carter was critical of the fact that she received no profit-sharing in the series or merchandising based on it except for her fee .
Wonder Woman was filmed at a time when feminism was taking hold in the United States. In the first season the series contained a lot of feminist messages, but then the producers decided to make the show more "family-friendly" according to the circumstances at the time and to avoid the statements. Carter insisted on being allowed to play "a positive female role model". She also indirectly ensured that female stunt performers prevailed. In a helicopter scene, she was doubled by a man who portrayed Wonder Woman so unbelievably that she simply took over the stunt herself. The producers were upset about going it alone and decided to hire a stunt woman for Carter in the future.
Wonder Woman brought Carter a loyal fan base in the LGBT scene, which is explained by Out magazine by the then unusual reversal of existing gender roles.
One of the most famous special effects in Wonder Woman was the pirouette , with which Wonder Woman transformed herself from her bourgeois identity into her superhero figure.
The television series formed the basis for the comic miniseries Wonder Woman '77 (2015). Writer Marc Andreyko was a huge fan of the TV series and praised Carter's "attractive but not too provocative rendition ... which embodies everything that makes women strong and great."
reception
“In the first season Wonder Woman still fights against Nazis, and in the next seasons in the modern age against increasingly boring opponents. However, Carter always looked adorable in Wonder Woman costume. Sometimes she was interpreted as a feminist icon, but often Carter's fame was only used as a vehicle for half-baked storylines. "
“The series works for four reasons: 1) an ugly duckling named Diana becomes a beautiful and powerful swan named Wonder Woman, 2) nobody is killed, 3) escapism embodied by the mystical Amazon Island, and 4) the idea of female emancipation .. The serious, seductive suffragette Lynda Carter is well complemented by a self-deprecating Lyle Wagoner. "
