James E. Webb (sound engineer)

James Edward Webb, Jr. (* 20th century ) is an American sound engineer who won an Oscar for the film The Untouchables in 1977 . In 1980 he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Rose .

Life

Webb started his career in 1971 on the sound team for the documentary Mad Dogs & Englishmen , a concert film about British blues / rock singer Joe Cocker . In the same year he was also involved in the documentary Soul to Soul , which accompanied a concert by American rhythm and blues , soul , jazz and rock musicians in Accra , Ghana . Elvis on Tour (1972) was another of Webb's sound work. The documentary, dedicated to the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley , won a Golden Globe Award . In 1976, together with William A. Sawyer, Chris McLaughlin and Richard Portman, he was honored with a BAFTA Film Award in the Best Sound category for the Nashville milieu study on the American country music scene, directed by Robert Altman . Webb worked with Robert Altman several times. In 2006 he was involved in the video documentaries A Wedding: Altman Style and Perspective on Altman's Perfect Couple ' .

In 1977 Webb was awarded an Oscar for Best Sound for the political thriller The Untouchables starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford, along with Rick Alexander , Les Fresholtz and Arthur Piantadosi . Webb was also nominated for a BAFTA Film Award in the Best Sound category along with Milton C. Burrow, Les Fresholtz, Arthur Piantadosi and Rick Alexander .

In 1980 Webb, along with Theodore Soderberg , Douglas O. Williams and Paul Wells, received a nomination in the Best Sound category for the musical film The Rose, starring Bette Midler and Alan Bates . Webb, along with Robert Knudson , Robert J. Glass and Don Digirolamo, received a nomination for the BAFTA Award in the Best Sound category for this film as well .

Webb was also involved in the American drama The Outsider (1983), the plot of which is based on the novel by Susan E. Hinton and which director Francis Ford Coppola once described as Gone with the Wind for 14-year-old girls. In 1989, Webb worked on Garry Marshall's romantic comedy Pretty Woman , which was the most viewed film in German cinemas in 1990 . Webb was also involved in the comic adaptation Dick Tracy (1990) by and with Warren Beatty , which received numerous awards.

The Internet Movie Database lists 65 films that Webb has worked on, the latter being the 2000 science fiction thriller Supernova . In 2001, Webb received the Cinema Audio Society Career Achievement Award, a lifetime achievement award.
