action

The film takes place in a not far distant future, when the earth is ruled by humans and genetically modified dinosaurs. Mainly it is about the police officer Katie Coltrane and her new partner Theodore "Teddy" Rex, a genetically modified and reduced to human size Tyrannosaurus Rex . Teddy, like all the other cloned dinosaurs, has a human brain, so he behaves almost exclusively like a normal person, and shows similar behavior in sexual terms. However, he is very voracious and bumbling, and he often injures people with his long tail, which he shakes around wildly when excited or pleased. Although Katie can't stand the dinosaur at first, a close friendship soon develops between the two. Katie and Teddy become involved in the murder of the dinosaur Oliver, who was murdered in a gruesome manner. Oliver has become the only victim of organ theft so far . Katie and Teddy soon discover that Professor Elizar Kane, the evil creator of the genetically engineered dinosaurs, wants to exterminate humanity and live forever thanks to a laboratory in Grid City. After the fall of mankind, he wants to populate the world with his creatures and lead a totalitarian regime. Meanwhile, Teddy falls in love with Molly the dinosaur girl. To get Teddy under his control, Kane has Molly kidnapped and frozen by his people, because he does not see the dinosaurs as independent beings, but as his personal property. Katie and Teddy must fight the nefarious army of Kane's helpers and their allies to stop the missile that Kane uses to darken the sun and wipe out all life on earth. And by the way, they also have to save Molly from Kane. Only when Katie and Teddy reach Kane's headquarters do they discover his "ark", a gigantic facility in which Kane has frozen almost all of his artificial creatures. Teddy saves Molly and locks one of Kane's assistants in the freezer. At the same time, Kane is preparing for the beginning of a new ice age and making final preparations for his own freeze. However, Katie and Teddy manage to destroy the missile and stop Kane. So the world will be saved after all and Molly and Teddy can finally embrace each other and admit their deep love. A little later, Katie and Teddy are promoted to the leaders of a new police force specializing in crimes against humans and dinosaurs.

background

  • The cost of the film was 35 million dollars .
  • Although the film was originally due to be released, the studio was so disappointed with the end result that it was decided to only release the film on VHS. This makes Theodore Rex the most expensive film to date that has only ever been released on the VHS medium .

By threatening a legal dispute, however, the creators managed to prevent Whoopi Goldberg from leaving the project, but according to her own statements, she continued to participate "only very reluctantly".
  • Overall, the film received very poor reviews from critics. On the one hand, the “bad effects ” and the “unspectacular plot ” were criticized, with many ideas apparently borrowed from Japanese television series from the 1990s.

  • The design of the film is based heavily on the 50s and 80s. B. also with the colors of the costumes and backdrops.
