Chucky 2 - The killer doll is back

Chucky - The Killer Doll (original title: Child's Play ) is an American horror film and the first part of the seven-part series of horror films about the fictional serial killer Charles Lee Ray, who died shortly before his death transferred a doll.

The film was only a moderate success when it came out. But it soon developed into a cult film among fans of the horror genre. The rumors and legends about the doll Robert served as a template for the film .

The film was indexed in Germany until October 2011.

action

The serial killer Charles Lee Ray is shot while on the run by the police officer Mike and escapes into a toy store. There he is shot again and seriously injured. He is aware that he will die and seeks out a human-like body. So he performs a magical ritual that conjures up a thunderstorm with lightning and thunder, destroys the shop and apparently kills him.

Little Andy Barclay receives a “Good Guy” doll from his mother for his sixth birthday . Little does he suspect that the ghost of the killer lives on in this doll, which he transferred to this doll shortly before his violent death.

The night after Andy's birthday, Chucky murders Andy's babysitter for not wanting to let him watch the news by hitting her eye with a toy carpenter's hammer, causing her to fall out of a window on the fifth floor. In a conversation with his mother, Andy tells her that Chucky told him his real name was Charles Lee Ray. He also says very derogatory things about his murdered babysitter, which Chucky is said to have told him. Andy's mother is very upset about it and doesn't believe him. The next day Andy skips school and makes his way with Chucky to the hiding place of Chucky's accomplice Eddy Caputo. He is murdered by a gas explosion caused by Chucky.

Andy is blamed for the murders, but he blames this on his doll. His mother's custody is withdrawn for the time being and Andy comes under psychiatric supervision.

When Andy's mother looks at the pack at home and the batteries fall out of the pack, but Chucky speaks anyway, she threatens Chucky to throw him into the fireplace, whereupon he becomes aggressive and attacks her. However, she can defend herself and Chucky flees. She tries to convince the police officer Mike that the ghost of the murdered man lives on in the doll. But only when he too is attacked by Chucky does he believe her. Together they want to visit a man named John, whom Charles Lee Ray met in prison and who taught him the voodoo skills that enabled him to transfer his spirit into the doll.

Because Chucky sustained a bleeding gunshot wound in his attack on Mike, he also see his teacher. He learns that he is slowly becoming human and that if he does not transfer himself further soon, he will have to stay in the doll's body forever. When John refuses to tell Chucky how to get back into a human body, Chucky breaks John's leg using a voodoo doll. When John still refuses to tell him, he breaks his arm and threatens to stab the doll with his knife. John tells him that he has to transfer his soul into the person he first told who he really is, which is little Andy. Chucky murders his former master using the voodoo doll. Andy's mother and Mike are late. Just before Ray's master dies, he warns the two of them.

When Andy sees that Chucky has come to get him in the asylum where he is under supervision, he panics and flees. The prison doctor who recommended the supervision of Andy is killed by electric shocks given by Chucky.

Andy flees home to hide from Chucky. Chucky manages to get into the house through the chimney and overpower Andy with a baseball bat. Shortly before Chucky can transfer his soul into Andy's body, Mike and Andy's mother prevent him from doing so. Chucky escapes and hides in a closet.

While searching for Chucky, Mike is surprised and knocked unconscious. Andy's mother manages to throw Chucky into the fireplace, and when Andy throws a burning match after it, the doll goes up in flames. Believing that they killed Chucky, they now help the injured Mike. When Andy notices that the remains of the doll have disappeared, the burnt Chucky appears surprisingly behind him and tries to grab him. His mother comes to his aid and shoots Chucky several times with Mike's pistol. The (“body”) parts of the doll are distributed over the entire room.

When the police finally arrive, Mike explains to his colleague what happened. He instructs him not to touch the parts of the doll. However, a policeman lifts the doll's head (not realizing that he is still "alive") and carries it to Mike. At that moment the doll's body storms into the room and tries to strangle the policeman. Mike shoots him in the heart, killing him for good.

Reviews

On the Rotten Tomatoes website , Chucky - The Killer Doll achieved a positive rating of 69% based on 35 counted reviews. Metacritic determined a Metascore of 58 out of 100.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 9, 1988 that the film was "energetic" but "smarter" and "smarter" than most horror films. He is also "well done", contains "effective" depictions and with Chucky has created a truly "malevolent" doll.

"What could have been an eerily beautiful horror film from the idea turns out to be a predictable horror thriller that relies on well-known, garish dozen effects."

Sequels and remakes

The film has been followed by six sequels so far. Don Mancini was involved as a screenwriter on all of the films.

In 1990, Chucky 2 - The Killer Doll Is Back Again . The direction was taken over by John Lafia , who wrote the script for the first part.

Chucky 3 followed a year later . The director Ronny Yu directed Chucky and his bride in 1998 ; six years later, Don Mancini himself took over the direction and staged the fourth sequel to the original with Chucky's Baby .

In October 2013, a sixth part was published with Curse of Chucky . Don Mancini was again responsible for the direction and the script. The film was the first in the series to be produced directly for the DVD market. Cult of Chucky was released in October 2017.

In 2019, a remake was released with Child's Play , which hit US cinemas in June 2019. Unlike the original, Chucky is not obsessed with the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, but is an online networked toy with adaptive artificial intelligence, which has been manipulated and has a malfunction.
