Chucky is a horror - comedy series that ran with it since 1988 six sequels. The eponymous main character is a child doll, into which the serial killer Charles Lee Ray had his soul delivered using voodoo magic while he was dying. The role of the murderer is Oscar- nominated Brad Dourif , he lends the doll his voice in all parts and in some parts of the series also embodies the human self of Chucky . The series' creator is Don Mancini , who wrote the script for all parts and also directed the fifth and sixth parts .

The series went through a lot of development during the first few parts. Especially the first part of the series is still excessively equipped with horror elements, while the fourth and fifth parts of the series overflow into a comedy and contain satirical elements. Since this development caused criticism, especially in the fan base of the series, Mancini decided to return the series to its original track in the sixth part, Curse of Chucky . While the first five parts were in theaters, Curse of Chucky was released directly on DVD.

The Chucky film series, like the Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street film series, is one of the most popular horror film series. In the fourth part of the Chucky series Chucky and his bride there is a small allusion to this, in which at the beginning of the film, in a scene, the mask of Michael Myers ( Halloween ) and the glove of Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street film series) and gets to see Jason Voorhees' mask ( Friday the 13th ).

In December 2013, Don Mancini announced on Twitter that a seventh installment in the series would go into production. However, so far there is no precise information about the plot or the actors. In January 2017, a new film called Cult of Chucky was announced. The film was released in October 2017.

In 2019 a new interpretation of the series was started with Child's Play , in which the creator Don Mancini was not involved. Mancini is working on another sequel to the original series.

Chucky the killer doll

The serial killer Charles Lee Ray is shot while fleeing by the police officer Mike and, seriously injured, escapes into a toy store. But he does not think of dying, but wants to continue killing. So he performs a magical voodoo ritual that conjures up a thunderstorm with lightning and thunder, destroys the shop and apparently kills him.

Little Andy Barclay receives a "Good Guy" doll from his mother for his sixth birthday. Little does he suspect that the ghost of the killer lives on in this doll, whom he transferred to this doll shortly before his violent death. Chucky finally begins to commit murders as a doll, for which little Andy is held responsible. Chucky aims to take over Andy's body. But he is shot dead by a police officer investigating the case.

Chucky 2 - The killer doll is back

Two years later, little Andy is placed in a foster family because his mother is admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to the events of the first part. The doll Chucky is brought back to life and tries to get possession of Andy's body again in order to transfer the spirit of Charles Lee Ray into a new body. In the end, however, Chucky is killed again in hot plastic in a toy factory.

Chucky 3

Eight more years later, Andy comes to a military facility. The remains of Charles "Chucky" Lee Ray are reassembled to create a new good guy doll, and the serial killer spirit comes to life. Chucky finds Andy and sends himself to him. Andy manages to poke Chucky into a fan that tears up the doll's body in the end.

Chucky and his bride

Six months after these events, Chucky's friend, Tiffany, appropriates the remains of the doll and sews it back together. She manages to bring him back to life, but is then killed by him. Chucky lets his girlfriend's soul run over into a female doll and the two now want human bodies back. In the end, however, Chucky and Tiffany kill each other.

Chucky's baby

Some time later, the murders in which Chucky and Tiffany were involved are to be filmed. The two make it to life again when the sexless doll Glen / Glenda thinks they are his parents. This doll is on the road as a ventriloquist doll with a cheater. Finally, Chucky and Tiffany want to find human bodies for their child again. They decide to take actress Jennifer Tilly and Redman for their own bodies and let Tilly have a baby. In the end, Tiffany actually manages to merge into Tilly's body, while Chucky is cut into several pieces with an ax.

Curse of Chucky

Nine years later, Chucky is handed over to a disabled young woman who lives with her mother in an old house. Chucky kills her mother, who later turns out to be his secret love, and begins to terrorize her family.

future

On February 9, 2018, it was announced that a series around the Chucky doll was in the works, which should not be a reboot, but rather a continuation of the old story. Producer David Kirschner also announced in an interview that in addition to the series, which was initially designed for eight episodes, further films are to follow in the series.

It was also announced in July 2018 that MGM and producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are working on a new edition of the franchise. The script for this was already written by Tyler Burton Smith, while the Norwegian Lars Klevberg is to take over the direction. The new edition of the franchise, however, should take place independently of the television series. The film Child's Play was released in US cinemas in June 2019.

In this case, the double evaluation of the franchise is only possible because the legal situation in the case of Chucky does not lie with one company alone. While Universal owns the home theater and TV rights, MGM has apparently been able to retain the rights for a theatrical exploitation.
