Curse of Chucky ( German  Der Fluch von Chucky ) is an American horror film that was released on DVD for the first time in the USA on October 8, 2013 in Germany on October 24, 2013. Curse of Chucky is the sixth film in the Chucky series and the first to be produced directly for the video or DVD market. The sequel Cult of Chucky followed in 2017 .

action

Four years after completing the previous film, a Chucky doll is in the mail of the paraplegic Nica and her mother Sarah. That evening, Sarah, who was killed by a stab wound, is found. One assumes suicide.

The next day, Nica is visited by her older sister Barb, accompanied by her husband Ian, their daughter Alice, their nanny Jill, and father Frank, a priest. Alice finally finds Chucky in the bathroom. When Nica and Alice cook chili for dinner, Chucky secretly pours rat poison into one of the bowls. Father Frank eats the poison, leaves the house early and dies in a car accident.

After everyone else has gone to their rooms to sleep, Nica tries to trace the origins of the Chucky doll. On the Internet she finds a newspaper article about Andy Barclay and the serial killer Charles Lee Ray (see Chucky 1 to 3), whose soul is said to be in the Good Guy doll. Chucky sneaks out of Alice's bed and kills Jill by kicking a bucket of rainwater and giving her an electric shock through the electrical outlets. Jill's death causes a power outage. Barb rushes over to check on Alice and finds Chucky sitting on the stairs that lead to the attic. Thinking Alice is in the attic, she looks for her there, pulling Chucky latex strips from her face. Chucky scares her and pulls the rest off her face. Then Chucky rams a kitchen knife in Barb's eye. Because the elevator is out of order due to the power failure, Nica crawls up the stairs to the first floor. Since Barb is already dead, Chucky reveals himself to Nica. Nica flees from him and tries to wake Ian, who doesn't believe her and takes her to the garage before he goes back into the house to find Alice.

Chucky follows them into the garage, starts the car, swallows the key and tries to kill Nica with carbon monoxide poisoning. When Ian comes back to the garage, he accuses Nica of being responsible for the murders. He disarms her and ties her to her wheelchair. A hidden camera was in Chucky's dungarees pocket the whole time, which Ian used to obtain evidence of Barb's affair with Jill. Ian checks the footage, which shows that Alice was hiding in a closet, locking Chucky and showing herself alive across from her. Before Ian can act, Chucky uses Nica's wheelchair to run over Ian and kills him with an ax. Nica frees herself from her bonds and heads Chucky with the ax, not knowing that he is still alive.

Chucky pushes Nica over the banister and she falls on the first floor. Nica asks why Chucky is doing this. Through flashbacks, Chucky explains that he was a family friend and that he was in love with her mother Sarah. Chucky - then still in his original human body as serial killer Charles Lee Ray - killed Nica's father and kidnapped Sarah while she was heavily pregnant. When Chucky realized Sarah was calling the police, he stabbed her in the stomach, causing Nica to be born paraplegic, and fled. While on the run, Charles Lee Ray / Chucky is shot by the police, who had previously been alerted by Sarah. Mortally wounded, he drags himself to a toy shop, where he can transfer his soul to a toy doll through a magical ritual before his human body dies (this is where the events of the first Chucky films follow). So Chucky is after Sarah and Nica because he blames them for the police shooting his human self back then.

After Chucky tells Nica the backstory of his revenge campaign, she tries to stab him. Then the police arrive at the location of the (current) event. A police officer sees Nica with a bloody knife in her hand. Chucky pretends he's just a doll again. The police therefore consider Nica to be the perpetrator. Some time later, Nica is found guilty in court. A policeman hides Chucky in a plastic bag and tries to give it to his client, Tiffany, who murders him in his car by cutting his throat (this scene takes place in Chucky and his bride ). Tiffany sends Chucky to his next destination in the mail. Alice now lives with her grandmother. When she comes home from school, Chucky is already waiting for her. Chucky persuades Alice to play "Hide the Soul", which leads to Chucky transferring his soul into Alice's body.

In the credits, an additional scene is shown in which Chucky is delivered to the now adult Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) - the protagonist of the first three Chucky films. When Andy turns to take a call from his mother, Chucky cuts his way out of the package. Andy is expecting Chucky, holds a shotgun on Chucky's head and says, "Played out!" Before pulling the trigger.

reception

Curse of Chucky was received mostly positively. Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 80% rating based on 15 reviews.

“Reboot of the trashy horror film series that returns to the bloody slasher beginnings. The professional design can hardly cover up the cynicism of the film. "

Trivia

  • The film builds on the first three parts,
    • by describing how the events at the beginning of Chucky 1 were set in motion,
    • through the newspaper article that Nica reads about the protagonist of the first 3 films Andy Barclay , as well
    • the reappearance of Andy Barclay (as portrayed in Chucky 1 and 2 by Alex Vincent) in the post-credits scene.
However, with the appearance of Tiffany, reference is also made to Chucky and his bride .
  • Chucky's and Tiffany's child from Chucky's Baby , Glen / Glenda, is discreetly mentioned.
  • Curse of Chucky is the first film to be released exclusively on DVD and Bluray.
  • According to the director, Curse of Chucky should "adjust its roots" again and bring ghost into the nursery, like Chucky - The Killer Doll and its successors Chucky 2 - The Killer Doll is back and Chucky 3 .
  • Leading actress Fiona Dourif is the daughter of Brad Dourif , who lends Chucky his voice in all parts of the English original and also portrays the human appearance of Charles Lee Ray .

continuation

In December 2013, Don Mancini announced on Twitter that a seventh installment in the series would go into production and was filmed from late 2016 to April 2017. The sequel is called Cult of Chucky and was released in the US in October 2017. Mancini took over again the direction.
