Alan Bates

Sir Alan Arthur Bates , CBE , (born February 17, 1934 in Allestree , Derbyshire , England , † December 27, 2003 in London , England) was a British actor .

life and career

His most famous role was that of Basil in Alexis Sorbas at the side of Anthony Quinn . In 1963, Lee Remick was his partner in The Second Man . In 1985 he appeared alongside James Mason and Greta Scacchi in the television film Dr. Fischer from Geneva . He also starred in ... Where the Wind blows , A Man Like Job , Loving Women , Hamlet , The Devilish Mr. Frost , The Rose and Gosford Park, among others . He didn't live to see the premiere of his last film Spartacus in 2004 because he had died of pancreatic cancer a few months earlier.

For A Man Like Job , he was honored with an Oscar nomination for best leading role in 1969 .

He was married to British actress Victoria Ward from 1970 until her death in 1992. In 1971 the twins Benedick and Tristan were born. Tristan died of an asthma attack in 1990.

Bates was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1996 and knighted (KBE) in 2003.
