history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Bordeaux district".
With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Bordeaux.

The canton bordered the cantons of Bordeaux in the north, the canton Floirac in the northeast, the canton Créon in the southeast, the canton Villenave-d'Ornon in the south and the canton Talence in the west .
