history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Blaye District".

With the founding of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Blaye.

The canton bordered in the north on the cantons of Mirambeau and Montendre in the arrondissement Jonzac in the department Charente-Maritime , in the east on the canton Saint-Savin , in the south on the canton Blaye and in the west on the canton Pauillac in the arrondissement Lesparre-Médoc on the opposite Side of the Gironde .
