Jack Solomon
Jack Solomon (born March 8, 1913 in Manhattan , New York City , New York , † November 8, 2002 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American sound engineer who won an Oscar for best sound and five more times for this Oscar and an Emmy nominee.
Life
Solomon began his career as a sound engineer in the Hollywood film industry in 1953 for the science fiction film Phantom from Space, directed by W. Lee Wilder , and has worked in the production of over 100 films over the course of his career.
At the 1970 Academy Awards , Solomon and Murray Spivack won the Academy Award for Best Sound for the musical film Hello, Dolly! (1969) directed by Gene Kelly with Barbra Streisand , Walter Matthau and Michael Crawford in the lead roles.
In the following years he was nominated five more times for the Oscar in this category: At the Academy Awards in 1972 , he and Richard Portman received a nomination for the sound in the comedy Opa can not keep it (other title: Opa Kotch - Mit Volldampf aus der Sackgasse, 1971) by Jack Lemmon with Walter Matthau, Deborah Winters and Felicia Farr . The next nomination followed in 1976 with Richard Portman, Don MacDougall and Curly Thirlwell for the feature film Funny Lady (1975), directed by film director Herbert Ross with Barbra Streisand , James Caan and Omar Sharif .
At the 1977 Academy Awards , Solomon was together with Harry W. Tetrick , William McCaughey and Aaron Rochin for the Oscar in the best tone category in the adventure , horror and fantasy film King Kong (1976) by John Guillermin with Jeff Bridges , Jessica Lange and Charles Grodin nominated. Another Oscar nomination in this category was made in 1979 with Robert Knudson , Robert J. Glass and Don MacDougall for the comedy To life and limb (Hooper, 1978) by Hal Needham with Burt Reynolds , Sally Field and Jan-Michael Vincent in the lead roles .
Solomon received his final nomination for an Oscar for best sound at the 1980 Academy Awards starring William L. McCaughey, Aaron Rochin and Michael J. Kohut for the 1979 science fiction film Meteor by Ronald Neame starring Sean Connery , Natalie Wood and Karl Malden as the main actor.
At the 1980 Primetime Emmy Awards , he was also nominated with David Dockendorf , Robert L. Harman and William L. McCaughey for an Emmy in the category of outstanding merits in film sound mixing, for the pilot film and another episode from the NBC- produced television series Skag (1980).
