Danilo Donati
Danilo Donati (born April 6, 1926 in Luzzara , † December 1, 2001 in Rome ) was an Italian costume designer and set designer .
Life
Donati first learned in Florence , the walls and frescoes . In the mid-1940s he moved to Rome, where he studied art . He then worked for several years as an art director for the TV broadcaster RAI . He began his film career in 1959 as a costume designer for Mario Monicelli's war film Man Called It The Great War . Between 1964 and his death in 1975 he worked on almost all of Pier Paolo Pasolini's films , and Donati was nominated for an Oscar for the first time in 1967 for his first collaboration, the 1964 Bible film The First Gospel - Matthew . In the same year he was also nominated for Alberto Lattuada's 1965 comedy Mandragola or The Lover as a Doctor . After another nomination in 1968 for Franco Zeffirelli William Shakespeare - adaptation of the Shrew , he received his first Oscar in 1969 for Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet .
Between 1969 and 1987 Donati worked seven times with Federico Fellini , including Fellini's Casanova , for which Donati won his second Oscar in 1977 and for which he was also responsible for the production design. After having worked mainly in Italy so far, he also worked on several international productions in the 1980s, including Flash Gordon , Red Sonja and Momo . In 1994 he worked for Roberto Benigni for the first time , followed by the joint productions Life is beautiful and Roberto Benignis Pinocchio .
Donati died of heart failure in 2001 at the age of 75.
