Erotic Tales from 1001 Nights is a film by the Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini from 1974. In individual episodes he tells 15 stories from the oriental fairy tale collection Thousand and One Nights .
action
The central story of the film is that of the love of the young Nur-ed-Din for his slave girl Zumurrud, who has been kidnapped by robbers and whom he finds again after a long wandering as a male king in a palace. Fortunately, his dream of love is still coming true. The random walk corresponds to the box principle of the film with which the other stories are told: the poet and the young men who give each other love and knowledge; the African king and queen watching a young couple in love; Yuman, who is forced to kill an innocent man to overcome witchcraft and who becomes a monk from a guilty conscience; Aziz, who unknowingly lets his fiancée Aziza die of her suffering because he goes mad because of a mysterious and cruel girl; Shazaman, who was turned into a monkey by a demon and who, thanks to the sacrifice of a princess, is given back his human form.
background
The leitmotif of the film: All stories begin with a journey or happen to a traveler. The realization of the film was also a journey for the film crew: it was shot in the deserts of Eritrea and Yemen as well as in Nepal .

Awards
The film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival . Pasolini was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for his directorial work.
