Franco Citti (born April 23, 1935 in Rome , † January 14, 2016 there ) was an Italian actor .

Life

Citti, whose family comes from the simplest of backgrounds in the Roman suburb, met the writer and later director Pier Paolo Pasolini through his brother Sergio in the 1950s . This put Citti in the lead role of his first film Accattone in 1961 . With a restless demeanor, deep-set eyes, high cheekbones and a tragic-sarcastic look, as well as a spontaneous and unaffected manner of speaking, he became a prime example of the “boy from the middle of life” sought and valued by Pasolini. Later, too, Pasolini, similar to Ninetto Davoli , came back to him again and again, so Citti again took on a leading role in Edipo Re (1967) and was seen in numerous supporting roles in other Pasolini films.

Citti, who was also seen on stage in a 1963 production of Carmelo Benes Salome, played several times in films by his brother Sergio and co-directed Cartoni animati (1997) with him .

Citti played in over 60 films, and since the 1970s in purely commercial works and international productions, including The Godfather . Since the 1980s he has been working increasingly for television. Critics often described the "intense physical and extraordinarily expressive" design of his roles.
