Carmelo Bene
Carmelo Bene (born September 3, 1937 in Campi Salentina , † March 16, 2002 in Rome ) was an Italian theater and film director , actor and author .
Life
After a normal school career, Bene enrolled at the Accademia d'Arte Drammatica in Rome, but did not finish it. In 1959 he played the leading role in Albert Camus ' Caligula , which he designed contrary to conventions at the time. Over the next few years he staged and played numerous classics, which he offered in an idiosyncratic manner: "aggressive, virulent, disrespectful to the limit of the bearable". His works were received by the critics with a love-hate relationship, rejected by the broad mass of the public, but described and celebrated as "brilliant" by intellectual, elitist circles.
Between 1968 and 1974, Bene also turned to cinema in order to transport his idea of poetic imagery and aesthetic conventions into a new medium. In addition, he was involved as an actor in various productions by other directors.
After this time he turned back to the theater. In 1994 he developed the Maurizio Costanzo show for television , in which he polemicized against everything and everyone.
There are numerous books, radio recordings, video recordings and records of his work.
