Ginger and Fred is a film satire by the Italian director Federico Fellini from 1986. Federico Fellini wrote the screenplay with Tonino Guerra . The main roles were played by Giulietta Masina and Marcello Mastroianni .
action
In the 1940s and 1950s, Amelia Bonetti (Giulietta Masina) and Pippo Botticella (Marcello Mastroianni) were a well-known dance couple who were also privately involved. They had their greatest success with imitations of the tap dance numbers by Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire . They haven't seen each other since their split in the 1950s, though, and that only happened thirty years later in Rome . Both are supposed to appear together for the last time as "Ginger and Fred" in the television show Ed ecco a voi . Although Ed ecco a voi is a big, well-known show, neither of them know what to expect. Only shortly beforehand do they find out, for example, that they are not supposed to have a main appearance, but should only introduce another: that of an ancient admiral who is revered as a hero . Soon they find themselves in a panopticon of peculiarities and bizarre things: among other things, an inventor of edible underwear, a cow with twenty teats, a dwarf ballet, a flying monk and a mafia boss sentenced to thirty years in prison are presented. While Amelia insists on her old role as an artist and has to put up with numerous humiliations and dismissals for this, Pippo claims from the outset to do the whole thing for the money and even stages his weaknesses. An improvised rehearsal in a washroom that has been closed due to renovation turns into a disaster. After the performance, which was nevertheless successfully completed with some effort, the two separate again.

Reviews
Fellini's late work, the title of which is reminiscent of the legendary dance couple Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, is still understood today as an accurate satire on a form of television entertainment that focuses on peculiarities and tastelessness. The two main actors embody the "alternative" in at least two respects: On the one hand, because they represent a phase in entertainment history in which value was still placed on grace and artistic talent, but also because of their moving humanity, which increasingly flattened under the conditions TV formats is no longer in demand.
"Fellini combines his satire on the unculture of organized mass television and advertising with a wistful and moving reflection on the loss of humanity in the age of consumer society. Formally of overwhelming visual power, the film is also a farewell to a certain kind of artistry. " ( Lexicon of International Films ).
The accurate satire on the unculture of organized mass entertainment is one of Federico Fellini's unforgettable masterpieces. The performances of Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina and Marcello Mastroianni in the leading roles are also brilliant. The actress Ginger Rogers, Hollywood's dream couple par excellence with Fred Astaire in the 1940s, sued the film at the time because she saw personal rights affected. However, the lawsuit was dismissed because the film has nothing to do with the dancer's life. (Prism Online)
