John Armstrong (director)

John Armstrong (born September 2, 1928 in London , † August 16, 2004 in France ) was a British director in the field of documentary films.

Life

Armstrong began working in the film industry in the late 1940s, initially in the field of film editing . His private fascination with cars was the reason that he participated in car racing-related documentaries such as Mille miglia 1953 in the early 1950s . In 1957 he made his directorial debut with the short documentary Song of the Clouds . The following year he made the film Coupe des alpes: The Story of the 1958 Alpine Rally . Further documentaries followed by the end of the 1980s. He also shot numerous industrial films for various companies. He last appeared as a director in 1989.

At the 1977 Academy Awards he was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category for The End of the Road . In the same year he won the British Academy Film Award for this .

In the 1990s he withdrew from his professional context for health reasons. Armstrong died of a heart attack at the age of 75.
