Award winners and nominations
With ten nominations, Fred Zinnemann's Julia had led the nomination field in the run-up to the award just before Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (nine nominations). Julia won four BAFTAs and thus the most awards of the evening. With only one prize, however, Close Encounters of the Third Kind were among the losers in the award.
