John Mollo

John Mollo (born March 18, 1931 in London , England - † October 25, 2017 ) was a British military historian and costume designer . He received an Oscar for the equipment for the films Star Wars and Gandhi .

biography

John Mollo began to be interested in uniform studies as a boy and published several books on army studies . He thus laid the foundation for his later film career.

Due to his interest in history and technology, Mollo began his career as a historical and technical consultant in 1971, including in 1975 with Barry Lyndon .

In 1977 director George Lucas became aware of Mollo, who hired him as a costume designer for Star Wars . Although it was his film debut, Mollo won the first of a total of two Academy Awards in 1978 for Best Costume Design . He also won a Saturn Award in the same year . After being with Alien - The sinister creature from another world (1979) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) further on two sci-fi films , the costumes had designed himself Mollo specializing in historical films . In 1983 Mollo was awarded the second Oscar of his career for Gandhi together with the Indian Bhanu Athaiya . He also received a BAFTA Award nomination.

In his final years, Mollo worked mostly for British television. He designed the costumes for the internationally successful history series The Snipers and Hornblower .

John Mollo's younger brother is the military historian, production designer and filmmaker Andrew Mollo (* 1940).

Mollo was married to the set designer Ann Mollo from 1956 to 1966 . In 1968 he married for the second time, and this marriage resulted in a son.
