Bhanumati "Bhanu" Athaiya (birth name: Bhanumati Annasaheb Rajopadhye ; Marathi : Marathi भानू अथय्या IAST Bhānū Athayyā ; born April 28, 1926 in Kolhapur , Maharashtra , India ) is an Indian costume designer who won an Oscar for best at the 1983 Academy Awards for Gandhi Costume design , becoming the first Indian citizen to win an Oscar .

Life

Bhanu Athaiya, who studied art at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Bombay , began her career as a costume designer in the film industry in 1955 with the film Milap and worked on the costume design of more than 150 films until 2004. During her decades-long career, she worked with well-known directors such as Guru Dutt , Yash Chopra , Raj Kapoor and Ashutosh Gowariker .

At the 1983 Academy Awards, she and John Mollo won the Oscar for Best Costume Design in Gandhi (1982) by Richard Attenborough with Ben Kingsley , Candice Bergen and Edward Fox in the lead roles . Her victory made her the first Indian citizen to win an Oscar. At the same time, she and John Mollo also received a nomination for the British Academy Film Award for best costume .

In 1990 she won India's most prestigious film award , the National Film Award for best costume design in the fantasy film musical Lekin… (1990) by Gulzar with Vinod Khanna , Dimple Kapadia and Amjad Khan . She received another National Film Award for best costume design in 2001 for Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India (2001) by Ashutosh Gowariker with Aamir Khan , Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley .

2009 Bhanu Athaiya received along with Om Puri the award for lifetime achievement ( Lifetime Achievement Award ) of the Filmfare Award , the oldest and most important awards that Hindi films and filmmakers in India are awarded.
