Pyaasa ( Hindi : प्यासा , pyāsā ; Urdu : پیاسا; translated: thirsty ) is a very successful Hindi film by Guru Dutt from 1957. It is inspired by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay's novel Shrikanta and was the first in a series of Dutt's film dramas in which a romantic-sentimental artist is the focus.
action
Vijay is an unsuccessful poet whose work is not taken seriously and valued even by his brothers. He is called a good-for-nothing and mostly hangs around the streets of Kolkata . In search of love and recognition, he meets the beautiful Gulabo, a prostitute who is immediately fascinated by his poems and falls in love with him.
Vijay also meets his ex-girlfriend Meena from college and finds out that she is married to well-known publisher Mr. Ghosh. Mr. Ghosh hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena.
One day Vijay gives a poor beggar his coat and tries to prevent the poor man from standing in front of a moving train. But Vijay is unsuccessful and the beggar dies, whom everyone thinks is Vijay because of the coat, but who is treated in hospital after the train accident. Gulabo is very upset, but has his poems published with the help of Ghosh.
Ghosh and Shyam, Vijay's friends, do not want to recognize Vijay and transfer him to a clinic for the mentally disturbed because he does not consider himself Vijay and is declared insane. Vijay's brothers are even paid by Ghosh so that they don't notice Vijay. A memorial is being created for the allegedly "dead" poet.
With the help of Vijay's friend Abdul Sattar, an eccentric masseur, he escapes from this clinic. At the memorial service, Vijay condemned the corrupt and materialistic world. After Shyam and Vijay's two brothers see that their youngest brother is still alive, they go to another publisher and announce that Vijay is alive to make more money. The poet does not want to know anything about all this hypocrisy and does not claim to be Vijay. With Gulabo he starts a new life.
