Abrar Alvi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abrar Alvi ( Hindi : अबरार अलवी , Abarār Alavī ; * July 19, 1927 , † November 18, 2009 in Mumbai ) was an Indian dialogue and screenwriter who was best known for his collaboration with the director Guru Dutt . He also directed a film.

Life

Alvi began working on film in 1953 as an assistant in the shooting of Guru Dutts Baaz . The director noticed him and entrusted him with writing the dialogues for Aar Paar (1954). Since then, Alvi Dutts has been a regular author of the film dialogues. Alvi wrote his first screenplay for Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). After the failure of this film, the next Guru Dutt-produced film Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) was released under the name Abrar Alvis. However, due to the cinematic style, film historians assume that Guru Dutt was the only director here as well. Alvi himself claims the direction for himself, but Guru Dutt directed the film songs. The film was a competition entry at the 1963 Berlinale and India's candidate for an Oscar nomination. Alvi received a Filmfare Award for best director .

After Dutt's death in 1964, Alvi continued his writing work into the late 1980s. His most important work during this phase was co-authoring with Gulzar for the dialogues in Harnam Singh Rawail's Sangharsh (1968).
