Ashutosh Gowariker ( Marathi : आशुतोष गोवारीकर, Āśutoṣ Govārīkar ; born February 15, 1964 (according to other sources: 1968 ) in Kolhapur ) is an Indian film director and actor .

Career

Ashutosh Gowariker started his acting career in Ketan Mehta's film Holi in 1984. He then appeared in several television series and other films.

Before directing Lagaan and Swades , he worked with the main cast of these two films, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan . He worked with Aamir in Holi and with Shahrukh in the television series Circus and the two films Chamatkar and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa .

He made his directorial debut with the film Pehla Nasha (1993) (inspired by Brian De Palma's Hollywood film Body Double ), which flopped at the box office. With Baazi , his second film, he had at least a moderate success.

He made his breakthrough with Lagaan and won many prizes. The film was even nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars .

In 2004 he directed Swades with Shah Rukh Khan . This film received rave reviews from critics but did not make a huge profit at the box office. The film was very popular overseas.

Ashutosh Gowariker's last film was Jodhaa Akbar , which hit theaters in 2008, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bacchan . In 2009 he started work on Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey , which leads into the time of the Indian freedom struggles of the 1930s.
