Jodhaa Akbar ( Hindi : जोधा-अकबर, Urdu : جودھا اکبر ) is a Bollywood film by Ashutosh Gowariker from 2008. In India the film opened on February 15 of that year. It was produced by UTV Motion Pictures .

Jodhaa Akbar is set in the 16th century and is about the wedding of the great Muslim ruler Akbar and the Hindu princess Jodhaa from Rajasthan .

Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar came to power at a young age and, under the initial direction of his guardian Bairam Khan , increased his sphere of influence through many campaigns of conquest.

After long bickering he was married to Princess Jodhaa from Ajmer. Jodhaa, who loves a man who has another religion, should outwardly accept him as a man, but inwardly she still had grief. She begins to love Akbar more and more, but his wet nurse, Maham Anga, gets in the way of the two.

Production and publication

The film was released in 2008 by Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. and UTV Motion Pictures produces. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and the screenplay is by Hyder Ali , Ashutosh Gowariker and KP Saxena . The film was released in Indian cinemas on February 15, 2008 and has been translated into French and English, among others. The German premiere was on April 3, 2008.

Reviews and awards

The film won the Audience Award for Foreign Films at the São Paulo International Film Festival 2008, two awards at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival of Muslim Cinema and several awards at Indian film festivals.

According to taz.de, the film shows a lot of splendor, in music, dance and equipment, but never ostentatious and pomp for an end in itself. The “beauty of the people, images, settings, colors and objects of the film” are “always in the service of humanism” . In addition to the love between the main characters, the film also deals with socio-political issues. Nevertheless, the film is relaxed, gentle and leaves time to breathe.
