Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro ( Hindi सलीम लंगड़े पे मत रो Salīm laṅgṛe pe mat ro ; translated: “Don't cry for Salim the lame”) is an Indian social drama by Saeed Akhtar Mirza from 1989.

action

Salim, a young man with a lame leg, lives with his parents and younger sister Anees in a Muslim residential area in Bombay. His older brother Javed, the only one of the siblings with a school education, was killed in an accident. His father is a textile worker looking for a job; after the textile workers' strike in Bombay in 1982 he was unable to find a job. The mother earns some extra money by sewing for the neighborhood.

Salim lives the life of a petty criminal who earns his money with his friends Peera and Abdul by extorting protection money and who also commits petty thefts. His world includes smugglers, fences, crooks and corrupt police officers. For diversion, Salim goes to the brothel and meets with his lover Mumtaz, a prostitute. There are occasional clashes with the rival gang of Rajan in the neighborhood.

After his mother suggests the educated Aslam as the groom for Anees, Salim visits him. His initial disappointment that Aslam has only a low income despite his education disappears when Aslam turns out to be the closest friend of the late brother Salim's. Aslam opens Salim's eyes to the miserable living conditions of Muslims, which are partly caused by allegedly religious traditions themselves, but also exist due to the negative attitude of the Hindu majority society.

With financial support from the influential criminals Ibrahim Malbari, Nathu Seth and Lala, Salim equips Anees and Aslam's engagement party. While dancing exuberantly at the party, he is stabbed to death by his opponent Rajan.

Others

The film is dedicated to the communist theater activist Safdar Hashmi , who was murdered in 1989 . It was shot in the Dongri, Do Tanki, Nagpada and Bachoo-Ki-Wadi neighborhoods of Bombay. The film songs with the lyrics by Kaifi Azmi were sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy .

criticism

Despite the technical sophistication of the film and the quasi-documentary presentation of the lost hero, the realism of the street makes the film a voyeuristic experience that allows the viewer to pity the unfortunates in their city.
