The Old Church on the Rymelsberg is the old Roman Catholic parish church of Langerwehe in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is registered under number 1 in the list of architectural monuments in Langerwehe and dedicated to St. Consecrated to Martin of Tours .

history

The St. Martin's patronage and grave finds from the 6th / 7th centuries. Century suggest a foundation in Franconian times.

The oldest parts of today's church, which are located on the lowest floor of the tower, date from the Romanesque period. In 1493 today's Gothic , three-nave and four-bay hall church with a choir and 5/8 choir closure was built, which was spanned by ribbed vaults. It replaces a presumably Romanesque hall church . In 1543 the building suffered severe damage in the course of the Jülich feud . Further damage followed in 1690 during the predatory wars of Louis XIV. The damage was then repaired. A sacristy was added in the baroque period . Durche a lightning strike in 1846 the spire , which was probably eight-sided, and destroyed by a simple pyramidal roof replaced. The church remained in this form until the Second World War .

From 1904 to 1907 the new parish church of St. Martin was built in the lower part of Langerwehe , because the old church had become too small. Thus the old church lost its status as a parish church. In the war years 1944 and 1945 the old church was very badly damaged. Almost all of the vaults collapsed and a large part of the interior was destroyed. The church was rebuilt by 1959, but the vaults were replaced by a simple flat ceiling. The vault is only preserved in the choir .

Furnishing

There is a church in the rococo - pulpit and a crucifixion scene in the Arc de Triomphe. Hermann Gottfried created the church's 14 stained glass windows in 1960.

organ

The church has had an organ again since 2014. It was built in 1977 by Gebr. Stockmann Orgelbau from Werl for the Gregoriushaus in Aachen . After the Gregoriushaus was closed, the diocese of Aachen stored the organ . At the instigation of the Association for the Preservation of the Old Church in Langerwehe, the diocese managed to get the organ free of charge. In 2014 the organ could be installed in the old church by the Wilbrand organ builder from Übach-Palenberg . The instrument has 11 registers.

Bells

A bronze bell from the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen hangs in the tower of the old Martinskirche . It was cast in 1960 and was originally intended for the new Martinskirche. But since its tone did not match that of the steel bell, it was installed in the old Martinskirche. The sound of the bell is g '; she weighs 765 kg.
